Report on the passing of Alan Whelan

Report

No football report this week due to the official lockdown, but a heartfelt report on the loss of another giant of local football who was Alan Whelan.

Our prayers and deepest sympathy go to his whole family at this sad time especially his wife Barbara.

Alan played in goal for a number of teams but most notably the Labour Club and Nelson Grove Road, with his giant frame being an unbeatable obstacle for many teams over numerous years.

He began playing for Constellation JFC when 13/14 years of age and went on to play for Poulton Villa in the youth league where his manager John Ashurst praised him for his outstanding performances and who also signed him for his Wallasey Sunday league teams.

Despite being a big man – even as a youngster – he was also a kind and considerate person and always had time for everyone he knew. A proud family man and always hard working, he also had his football family and gained many friends throughout his playing days, which included many opponents.

His banter regarding football matters and life in general were always worth listening to and his zest for life was always evident as he fought for over 20 years with his problems. So, his loss to all that knew him will be painfully felt, but he will never be forgotten.

Rest in peace big man.

Tom Potter
