Further recent loses to report

Sad news is becoming the main theme of the weekly report as yet again I have to report the sad loss of former members.

Eddie Eichelshiem

Referee Eddie Eichelsheim who joined the league when arriving from his home country of the Netherlands in the late 1960’s has passed away following a long illness, but using Eddie’s words “he had a good innings”. Eddie loved his football and even introduced a cup competition into the league called the Dutchman Cup, which is still being played for this season. Eddie was a good friend of Arthur Keen, as they both served the league on the management committee and it was Arthurs team Borough Rovers who won the inaugural trophy in season 1983-84. Eddie was a no-nonsense referee and performed in all local leagues and officiated in Cheshire County FA and Wirral District FA cup competitions before taking a well-deserved rest. Eddie was a keen swimmer and angler and I believe even had his own fishing boat, but he was also a family man and had three marriages and so we pass on our sincere condolences to son Tom who helped him run the Flying Dutchman stores and his daughter Rosa plus his step daughter Kelly who cared for him in his later years, and who we know will miss him greatly, as we all will. Many thanks Eddie for your service and friendship and may you rest in peace.

Cliff Hallam

Another long-standing member of the league was Cliff Hallam who was the founder member of Wallasey RAOB FC who participated in the league for many years. Cliff was always a gentleman and showed respect to everyone he met and he helped many a player on their path to enjoying the sport. He even had the Walters family as players and that included John who went on to play professionally for Stoke City and Republic of Ireland. Cliff also loved playing bowls for the British Legion in Withens Lane and also played darts for a few teams and was a member of the ROAB up until his death. Many will remember Cliff as a lovable and dapper gent and we express our deepest sympathy’s to Martin and the family for their sad loss.

John McElroy

A third loss to the league was John McElroy who died after suffering heart attacks whilst at home. John Played for Borough Rovers, Cadburys and Farmers Arms to name a few teams and was a model footballer with silky mid-field skills. At the age of 66 John had loved football all his life and was an avid Evertonian, attending many fixtures since the 1970’s. John was a likable and calmly spoken man so the league extend their condolences to his family members and pray he can rest in peace.
