League Notice Monday 30th November 2020

By Phil Kemble

Peter Leay

Thanks to the lockdown restrictions being lifted we should have a football report next week – weather permitting.

However, yet again I can only deliver sad news this week as yet another stalwart of amateur football passed away yesterday (28/11/20) after a fairly long illness.

Peter Leay was an avid football supporter and became involved at junior level before moving up to youth and open age with a number of teams, but was never a player himself. His first love was music and he had his own vinyl record shop in Liscard for many years and even had success with his involvement with a local group.

Peter was never one to mince his words and could be described as forthright, as he could hold his own in any form of discussion, but was always willing to offer support and advice to anyone asking for it.

His knowledge of local football was second to none and he provided encouragement at many teams that included Olympic, Neston, Heswall Gayton, Cammell Laird, Heswall Youth and Wirral SB which were all junior or youth teams as well as being part of Poulton Victoria and Heswall FC in the West Cheshire League.

Peter provided leadership and direction at all his teams and had a fantastic knowledge of rule books, so was able to provide direction whenever it was required, especially in the defence of players who may have strayed.

His enthusiasm for football will be missed by many at every level and all that knew him will be saddened by his passing.

RIP Peter Leay.
