Week Fourteen 27th November 22 - including a tribute to Billy Heywood

Report compiled by Tom Potter League Secretary

Capitol Cup 2nd round

For the second week the council closed all grounds due to heavy rainfall, but one fixture did survive in the Capitol Cup 2nd round as it was played on a 4G pitch in Ellesmere Port.

In a typical cup-tie encounter the game was a frantic affair between Shore Villa Athletic and AFC Shore Villa, with the latter opening the scoring through Gary Baker to take the lead. But the game was soon level as Paul Reddington scored for Athletic and then Tom Rowlands put them ahead.

The second half saw AFC level the scores through James Outram as both teams missed well created efforts, but in the final 20 minutes James Parker netted the winning goal for Athletic for a 3-2 verdict to go into round three.

Tribute to Billy Heywood

Bad news did befall the league this week with the sad loss of avid supporter Billy Heywood, who passed away after a long battle with illness and our condolences are expressed to all his family and friends including June, Leigh, Clare and son Billy. For years on end Billy supported local teams from the side lines and was an ardent supporter of Wallasey football in general.

His main teams were the Dale Inn, Bird in Hand and St Joseph’s FC as he followed them all over Wirral and Cheshire as they sought success and in later year’s he watched the Great Float S&S club.

His favourite professional team was Everton, but he also loved his darts and became a legend in every league he played in, winning many trophies and making many friends when playing for the Dale Inn, St Josephs and the Parkview Social Club.

Billy could be relied upon to tell funny stories with his special wit and recount on incidents in his own unique way. He could always have an opinion on any sport you were willing to discuss but added his humour at any given time.

For a man with such big hands, he nearly always played darts with small, barrelled arrows, but always knew where the treble 20 was and any double!

At every football fixture Billy could be relied upon to have his blue bag of ‘refreshments’ for the players and supporters who were very appreciative of the contents as they seemed to have an effect on everyone. Enough said!!

RIP Billy – legend at darts, as a man and a great follower of amateur Sunday football – you will never be forgotten and will always be missed.
